- Swedish town of Birka founded as a centre of trade on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren.
- In 800, Charlemagne is crowned emperor. He continues to extend the empire, conquering Barcelona in 801 and finishing his conquest of Saxony in 804, and establishing boundaries between the western and eastern empire with Nicephorus I.
- In 802, Jayavarman II establishes the kingdom of Angkor.
