Antonius Paulus Vittali was born on 29 May 1880 in Amsterdam. His parents were Paulus Wilhelm Vittali and Anna Christina Louisa Blok. His paternal grandparents were Giovanni Antonio Vitali (1823-1893) and Sophia Pardoen (1827-1905), and his maternal grandparents were Elias Blok (1835-1876) and Johanna Francisca van Tinteren (1838-). His great-grandfather, Hendrik Blok (1813-1880) had recently died, on 5 May.
Antonius was born when his father was 17 and his mother was 18. Paulus and Anna, who married seven years later, had the following additional children: Johanna Christina Louisa (1882-1975), Pieter (1885-1963), Hendrik Johannes Cornelis (1887-1935), Sophia Maria (1889-1947), Catharina Maria (1892-1969), Johanna (1894-1970), Paulina (1896-1980), Johanna Cornelia (1899-1981) and Paulus Wilhelm (1903-1994).
Giovanni Antonio Vitali had moved from Druogno, Italy to Amsterdam in the 1840's. Soon after he founded the family chimney sweeping business. Antonius followeed a related trade of brush making. Giovanni died four days before Antonius turned thirteen.
On 9 December 1908 in Amsterdam Antonius married Gerarda Johanna Bakker (1885-1972). They had two children before they married: Elias and Johanna Maria. Antonius and Gerarda lived at 32 Roetersstraat, Amsterdam in their early years together. They were in their twenties and trying to raise two children, so it is clear why Antonius and Gerarda proved insolvency and did not have to pay marriage fees. The marriage lasted for 48 years and the couple had nine children, seven of whom survived into adulthood.
Later on, Antonius worked as a night watchman. He passed away on 8 June 1957, shortly after his 77th birthday. Gerarda died on 5 January 1972 aged 86.
