Obituary

Death of Mr. Archibald Cunningham.
A Famous Sporting Writer.

Poor old Archie Cunningham, "The Wizard," the well-known spotting writer, passed in his checks last week. He died in Sydney Hospital somewhat suddenly on Wednesday, September 21, after having been removed from the street, where he had been found in a state of partial collapse from heart failure. He was about 65 years of age. Archie Cunningham was for fully 50 years associated with the sporting press of Australia and was for a considerable time on old "Bell's Life" in Sydney. At different times he was sporting writer on the Sydney and Melbourne dailies and weeklies, and was recognised as not only a good sporting writer, but a man with an immense fund of information of the Australian turf; and certainly he was so good a judge of horses he stood as one of the cleverest tipsters in this country. During the last seven or eight years Mr. Cunningham was sporting writer for the "Newsletter," but latterly, because so feeble, he was allowed his days through at this office, his spirit revolting against an asylum. As a turf prophet old Archie made his name famous over and over again, notably when he tipped the Melbourne Cup for the "Newsletter" 1, 2, 3, three times over. Cunningham was kind and well-meaning, and left no debts to the world, for he was generous to his fellows on all occasions. This is his epitaph by one who knew him for forty years—he was a straight and true man.
