Asaph Putnam was born on September 11, 1724 in Salem Village, Essex County, Massachusetts to Isaac Putnam and Anna Fuller. He moved to Sutten, Massachusetts as a boy.

Asaph married Sarah Park on September 7, 1743. In about 1750, Asaph and Sarah moved to southern Vermont and settled in Dumerston, Windham County. The family left Vermont in about 1760 and lived in Queensbury, New York until after the American Revolution. He lived in a log house which faced South street, on the estate of the late Roger Haviland, near the big dam. He was an active member of the Society of Friends in the 1760s. On May 5, 1767, Asaph was voted the town clerk, assessor, constable, and pathmaster of Queensbury township, New York. Asaph served as town clerk until 1777.

Sometime after 1777, Asaph moved to Lansingburgh, New York. Sarah died about 1770, and Asaph remarried to Rebecca in Pittstown, New York in the early 1790s. Asaph died on August 6, 1796 in Pittstown, New York and is buried in Old Cooksborough Cemetery in Pittstown, New York. His second wife, Rebecca, was the administix of his will in August 1796.


"Queensbury the 4th day of February, 1771. We the subscribers have this day settled all our accounts on book excepting the saw mill and grist mill affairs and there remains due to Abraham Wing to balance book account, nine pounds, fifteen shillings York currency as witness our hands."
