Biography

Baldwin IV, also known as Baldwin of Lille, was the Count of Flanders from 988 until his death in 1035. He was the son of Arnulf II of Flanders (c960-988), Count of Flanders, and Rozala of Italy.

Baldwin IV was known for his military prowess and his strategic alliances. He fought against the Vikings, the Normans, and the Holy Roman Empire, among others. He also allied with the king of France, Hugh Capet, against the Holy Roman Emperor, Otto III von Sachsen (980-1002).

Baldwin IV was also known for his cultural and religious interests. He supported the arts and founded several monasteries and churches, including the Abbey of Saint Bertin and the Abbey of Saint-Omer. He also promoted the development of the wool industry in Flanders, which became a major source of wealth for the region.

Baldwin IV of Flanders likely spoke Old Dutch or Old Flemish as his native language. During his time, the region of Flanders (located in what is now modern-day Belgium and parts of France and the Netherlands) was predominantly Dutch-speaking, with a distinct local dialect. French was also widely spoken in the region due to its political and cultural ties with France. However, it is likely that Baldwin and his contemporaries would have primarily spoken Dutch/Flemish in their daily lives.

Baldwin IV died in 1035 and was succeeded by his son, Baldwin V. He is remembered as one of the most important counts of Flanders, who helped to shape the history and culture of the region.
