Lillian Carter was born 15 August 1898 in Richland, Stewart County, Georgia, United States to James Jackson Gordy (1853-1948) and Mary Ida Nicholson (1871-1951) and died 30 October 1983 in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, United States of unspecified causes. She married James Earl Carter (1894-1953) 27 September 1923 in Plains, Sumter County, Georgia, United States.
Commonly called "Miss Lillian," she is best known as the mother of former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter (1924), for her contribution to nursing in the state of Georgia and as a Peace Corps volunteer in India. She and her husband James Earl Carter (1894-1953), in addition to the former President, were the parents of Gloria Carter Spann, evangelist Ruth Carter Stapleton and Billy Carter.
