Bulimba is an inner suburb of Brisbane, Australia. It is 4 kilometres (direct distance) south-east of the CBD, and is located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River. Bulimba means magpie lark, which is the name also given to Bulimba Creek.

The suburb is occasionally seen in Australian media as the electorate of the Member for Griffith and former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, covers Bulimba. It is also home to several Army Cadet Units – 12 ACU and 161 Aviation Detachment at Bulimba Barracks on Apollo Road.

Bulimba is also a popular meeting place, especially on weekends, with a variety of cafes, restaurants, cinemas and a hotel.

Demographics[]

At the time of the 2006 Census, Bulimba had a population of 5,105, of which 3,741 were born in Australia. 4,460 people indicated English to be their only spoken language. The median age of persons was 35 with an average household size of 2.4[1]

History[]

Bulimba was originally settled as a farming district, however was subdivided as a result of the 1880s land boom. In earlier times, the suburb was (unusually) located on both sides of the river. The part of Bulimba on the northern bank of the river is today regarded as Teneriffe or New Farm[2]. If searching for an old address, the possibility that it is on the northern side of the river should be considered.

Transportation[]

Ferry services, via CityCat and CityFerry, are located off Oxford Street and Apollo Rd. Bulimba is also serviced by Brisbane Transport buses.
