Obituary: Mrs. Caroline Pratt Van Cott, widow of John Van Cott, passed away at her home on south West Temple street at 5 o’clock Sunday morning, October 10, 1915. She was born in Detroit, Mich., Jan 20, 1840. She was the mother of Mrs. Viola V. Madsen, Oscar Van Cott, Marion Van Cott, Ray Van Cott, Dr. Harold Van Cott, Mrs. Edith Palmer, and Mrs. Lovins V. White. She is survived also by two brothers: Joseph A. Pratt of Fresno, Cal., and Dr. John W. Pratt of Coatsville, Pa. her father was Anson Pratt, eldest brother of Parley P. and Orson Pratt.
Her parents having died before she was eight years of age, her uncle Orson took her has his daughter and she came to Utah with his family in 1850. She was one of the first settlers of what is now Farmers ward, Salt Lake county.
She was a lover of music and home, and was ever an enthusiastic supporter of the university and of education generally. All of her children have taught school, and are graduates of some university.
While her early years were spent in poverty and struggle common to pioneer life, her later years have been spent in peace and comfort, surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her friends and family knew her as a loyal citizen, a good wife, and a good mother.
