Description:

Formatting templates are used to modify the appearance or position of text or other elements on Wikia pages.

Function templates produce units of text or other elements that are otherwise difficult or tedious to render. Some should be substituted, using this syntax: {{subst:template_name|parameter/s}}.

Conversion templates may do a little of both as is discussed in Wikipedia:Category talk:Conversion templates.
