Description:

Function templates produce units of text or other elements that are otherwise difficult or tedious to render. Some should be substituted, using this syntax: {{subst:template_name|parameter/s}}.

Formatting templates are used to modify the appearance or position of text or other elements on Wikia or Wikipedia pages.

Conversion templates may do a little of both. See Category talk:Conversion templates for that.
