Model pages are a type of "template" in the broad sense of the word, not the strict MediaWiki sense. Some of these are now built into procedures that are accessed more simply from elsewhere, such as Help:Starting pages for people, places, or surnames (which you can reach easily by clicking the sidebar link headed "Create ...").
