Charles Douse (1898-aft1920) was a coal miner in West Virginia and Illinois.

BirthEdit

Charles Douse was born May 6, 1897 in Pennsylvania. His father was Jonas Daukša (a.k.a. John Douse). His mother is unknown, but it is believed that her name was Mary.

1900 Federal CensusEdit

In 1900, Charles resided in Conyngham Township, Pennsylvania, with his father John Douse, his brother Joseph Jacob Douse, a woman by the name of Mary (Wilkowska) Rice, and Mary Rice's son Joseph M. Rice and daughter Mary Rice. There is some speculation that Mary (Wilkowska) Rice may have been Charles' mother, although such speculation has not been supported by sufficient evidence.

Departure of Charles' Father John DouseEdit

Charles' father John abandoned the family around the year 1900, when Charles was about 3 or 4 years old. Charles was raised by his father's brother Peter Douse. Charles' father eventually appeared in Charles' brother Eva's household in Jersey City, New Jersey in the 1920 census.

Temporary Residence in IllinoisEdit

Charles' World War I draft registration card lists his residence as Williamson County, Illinois, where he worked for the Dale Coal Company, and lists his next of kin as his half-sister Mary Shotis. The draft card was prior to the 1920 census (by which he apparently returned to West Virginia).

1910 CensusEdit

Charles lived with his uncle Peter and aunt Anne and in Conyngham Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, in the 1910 census.

1920 CensusEdit

Charles lived with his uncle Peter and aunt Anne in Cranberry, Raleigh County, West Virginia, in the 1920 census. The family had also taken in a border by the name of Martin Renteck.

Marriage and ChildrenEdit

Charles had one son William Douse who resided in Hollywood, Florida, at the time of his death in 2005. Family members interviewed do not recall the name of Charles' wife.

DeathEdit

Charles has not been found in the 1930 census, however the social security death index indicates that he did not die until August of 1960.[1] According to Charles' great-neice Rose Mary (Siney) Monroe, Charles died of lung cancer after years of working in the coal mines.

Suggestions for Further ResearchEdit

Charles' brother Joseph had a neice by the name of Margaret Rohani (?-) who is believed to have further information regarding what became of Charles Douse. Researcher Kevin Borland is presently working on locating Margaret for an interview. After the interview, the next step would be to order Charles Douse and William Douse's social security applications. Also, an attempt should be made to contact the Douse families of Broward County, Florida, to determine whether or not they descend from Charles via his son William.
