Cottam is derived from the word "cottage". It means a collection of cottages at the end of a lane, smaller than a hamlet, giving the following place names:

Today there are Cottams found in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and the United States.

Not necessarily all, but many of the Cottams in the United States are descended from Thomas Cottam (1820-1896) who was born in Yorkshire, England and immigrated to the United States after being converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later moved to Saint George, Utah. There is a sizeable Cottam population in Saint George to this day.

A book was published listing, to the extent possible to the researchers, the descendents of Thomas Cottam.
