Elisabeth "Elise" Mueller was born in about 1828 in Darmstadt, in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, which was then an independent member of the German Confederation. After moving to Belleville, Illinois, she and her husband, Joseph Martin, had two children: Augusta (1857) and Fred (1912).

In the 1870s, the family moved to St. Louis, and lived at 2407 DeKalb Street from at least 1878 to 1882. By 1887, Joseph and Elise moved to 2208 Clark Avenue.

Elise, who continued to live at 2208 Clark Avenue after Joseph's death in 1894, died of nephritis at Jefferson Hospital, 2604 Gamble Street, on June 17, 1906. She was buried on June 19 at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, 7030 Gravois Avenue.
