Emily recounted that she had six older brothers who went off to work in South Wales and that her mother died in childbirth. Emily was brought up by an aunt.
She became a domestic servant at the age of 12. In 1911, at the age of 17, she was working as a servant for Hayman Bradley, a miller farmer and dealer in Milltown, Marwood.
Before 1914, she may have taken up work at The New Inn, Ilfracombe, where she met William Cornelius. (William appears to have sent her a photograph of him in military uniform from overseas, presumably during the war), suggesting they knew each other before the war began).
Emily and William married on 6th June 1923 at the parish church in Marwood, Devon. At the time, Emily's address was given as Guineaford, Marwood while William was living in Barnstaple ., suggesting that they were no longer working in Ilfracombe.
