Obituary

MRS. Wm. BURLESS.

The death took place on Sunday last at Mascot (North Botany) of a very old and highly esteemed resident of this town and district, in the person of Mrs. Burless (wife of Mr. William Burless), at the age of 77 years, the cause of death being senile decay. The deceased lady was a native of Kent, and arrived in Australia in the year 1839 with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Vidler, and with them and other members of the family settled in Jamberoo at what is known as the old Vidler homestead. Mr. Burless came from Cornwall in 1840, and settled with his people at Mount Pleasant. The couple were married some 60 years ago, and after residing in Kiama for upwards of 40 years, removed from the district, but eventually returned a few years ago, and for some little time kept a fruit and confectioner's shop in Terralong street, which they afterwards disposed of, and removed to the metropolitan distrtct. The late Mrs Burless was a niece of the late Mr. John Vidler, one of the old patriarchs of Methodism in this district, and a sister of Mrs. Wyldeman, senr., of Jamberoo, and was truly beloved by all who knew her—too much cannot be said of her self-sacrificing qualities, loving disposition and goodness of heart, she being ever ready to do anybody a good turn if it was in her power to do so. By her aged husband and family of eight (5 girls and 4 boys, all grown up) her death will be keenly felt, for she was a devoted wife and loving mother, and to them we extend our sincere sympathy, as will also their many friends in this district, where they are held in great esteem. The remains of the deceased lady, who was a staunch Methodist all her life, were laid to rest in the Rookwood cemetery, a large number paying their last tribute of respect by following to the graveside, where the Rev. Mr. Hewitt (Methodist minister, South Sydney) performed the last sad rites.
