Obituary

LATE MR. KEN KABLE

One of Bathurst's best known residents who for many years conducted a farming property at Orion Park, died in the District Hospital on Sunday night after an operation on Wednesday.
He was Mr. Erle Kenneth (Ken) Kable, a son of a district pioneer, George Mills Kable, who settled at Orton Park in the middle stages of the last century.
Deceased had been in ill-health for a number of years, although his death came as a great shock to his numerous relatives and friends.
One of a family of eight, Mr. Kable had spent all his life in the district except for a short period when he travelled throughout the West as salesman for the Beale Piano Co.
Born in 1892 and educated at the old Howick Street Public School, Mr Kable married a daughter of another well-known family, Miss Dorothy Sylvia Maloney, at All Saints' Cathedral, Bathurst, in 1919, and acquired a 100-acre property adjoining that of his late father at Orton Park. He continued as a vegetable farmer until 1951 when after the disastrous floods of that year, he sold out to live in Bathurst.
However, his love for the soil did not die, and for a couple of seasons he grew vegetables on land near California Productions, until last year when he raised tomatoes on a property at White Rock.
He took an active interest in the Bathurst branch of the Vegetable Growers' Association, and after being on the committee for some years was elected president, which position he held up to the time of his death.
Of extremely cheerful disposition, Mr. Kable always had a good word for everyone, and was prepared to assist anyone needing a helping hand.
A keen sportsman, deceased was a member of the old Orton Park Cricket Club, being responsible for many fine scores off the bat, as well as being a useful bowler. Commencing in the early 1920's, the club soon did well in the competition.
Mr Kable, an ex-Abercrombie Shire councillor at the same time as the late Ben Chifley, was a staunch supporter of the Australian Labor Party.
He was a personal friend of Mr. Chifley. Deceased remained a member of the council for several years and was responsible for many improvements in the area.
He was a member of the A.H. & P. Association for many years and a regular exhibitor at the Society's shows.
Deceased played a good deal of tennis in his younger days. He was also a keen motorist, being a foundation member of the original Bathurst Light Car Club.
He had acted in the capacity of agent at Sydney Municipal Markets for numerous district growers.
During the war years, Mr. Kable worked for some time in Bathurst Small Arms Factory. He also acted in an advisory capacity to members of 'Ready Maid' quick frozen food firm when they first commenced operations in Bathurst.
Deceased is survived by his wife, nephew Michael; sisters Hilda (Mrs. Freestone, Bathurst) and Clarice (Mrs. Astley, Dubbo) ; and three brothers, Claude (Bathurst), Rupert (Bathurst) and Melvyn Lyle ('George') also of Bathurst.. Three brothers, Ilford, Glendon and Frederick predeceased him. Deepest sympathy will be extended to the bereaved relatives.
The funeral will leave All Saints' Cathedral today after a service commencing at 2.30. for interment in the Church of England portion of the Bathurst cemetery.
