Welcome to Familypedia!

AboutTutorialHelp

(The largest semantic wiki for genealogy.)
We are currently working on 201,255 articles and 317095 other pages.
Here you can keep your family history research
organized, evergreen, accessible, and collaboration-ready.
Join us in this important and exciting work!

This is a place where you can create articles about your ancestors, and easily link them to other articles about where and when they lived. You can work wholly within this wiki, or you can link your articles to sites on the world wide web. And because this is a wiki format, you can work collaboratively with others to create a network of articles about your ancestors and about those they lived and worked with — or simply about people you find interesting. It is our hope that, as this site grows, we will gradually be able to link our ancestors into a network that goes far beyond the simple nuts and bolts of who lived where and when.

The focus of this site is on capturing the details of the lives of our ancestors, both those historically significant people and the everyday people usually not listed in encyclopaedias, histories, or even "people's histories". Along the way, the site will also provide information about the historical and social context in which our ancestors found themselves.

This site aspires to be truly global, with active contributors and information from several cultures and languages, and all four Hemispheres.

We have some of the latest wiki software to make page display easy and minimize duplication of work. Semantic MediaWiki is being developed to make data entry as easy as on a commercial program and to make data retrieval and presentation easier still. That has now progressed well enough to be the best method of creating pages for people, replacing the info page system that may be familiar to users from 2007-2009.

Sign in and join us. Plenty of friendly genealogists here to help if you get stuck!

Cultural sensitivity: Some cultures are sensitive to the recording of certain types of information. For instance, some tribes of Australian Aborigines forbid the viewing of images of dead people. Australian Aborigines request that pages with pictures of deceased Aboriginal people be clearly marked as such so that the user can choose if they wish to view the page. See guidelines on cultural protocol.

Alternative spellings: Where you are familiar with alternative spellings (eg White/Whyte), please note them on the surname article page and if possible create and/or link to those categories. Other readers may not have known of the alternatives or thought to look there. See Help:Surname for more details about how surname categories work)

Well done, folks! We're still comfortably in fourth position in the list of the biggest English-language wikias (which I have just updated; maybe one of you younger people should bookmark that page so as to update it when I'm no longer capable).

We get between 6,000 and 10,000 page views on average days. Definitely doing something right.

I've been adding to the smwtest wiki to try to help us understand the current versions of our SMW extensions. To see the release posting that corresponds to our current version of Semantic Forms, see http://smwtest.wikia.com/wiki/Semantic_Forms_3.3

Those of you who are really interested might "follow" its category and the SMW equivalent.

We have passed the half-million mark. Just under 40% are articles, and lots of those are about places, but there are tens of thousands of articles about individuals, cleverly linked. Keep it up, folks! -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 10:06, November 4, 2015 (UTC)
