Articles (most all of them imported from wikipedia) that use the template {{wp}} shall be converted by AutoWikiBrowser to point to the article in Familypedia if it exists. If the article doesn't presently exist, the link will point to wikipedia. Dates will always point to familypedia regardless whether an article for them exists or not.

Subsequent runs of this bot will be able to upgrade the wikipedia: links to familypedia links when those articles become available.

Rationale for the change: {{wp}} uses the parserfunction #ifexists which is extremely expensive, and some of the wikipedia imported pages can have up to 100 wp template uses. At the time the wp template was created, it was not known that the function was expensive and was provided as a convenience in order to avoid the "red sea" of redlinks on a page when a wikipedia article was imported.

An example of the output from AWB may be found at Abraham Lincoln (1809)/Biography. -~ Phlox 23:39, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Excellent.
  • Small point: I think all categories should point to Familypedia. (I've a feeling wp doesn't work with them anyway.) If we don't have a category that appears on a copied page, we probably should; the only likely exceptions are where we deliberately change, eg 1920 births, and we should have cat redirects for them so that less experienced people who copy from WP do not re-create.
    • Exception to the category request: non-English imports, such as Wp globe tiny ! — Robin Patterson (Talk) 09:17, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
  • Very small point: some readers may wonder whether AWB is really a bot as described.

Ok- I'll check for categories. Not sure what the source of confusion about AWB bot status might be. AWB can be run in full automatic mode (you check auto save on its Bot Tab). For this particular run, it does a search and replace on occurrences of

  • {{wp|link destination (first)|link text if any(second)}}
    • and replaces it with a subst:
  • {{subst:#ifexist:${first}|[[${first}|${second}]]|[[Wikipedia:${first}|${second}]]}}

Really, anyone with Windows 2000 or later can do AWB bot runs. Maybe the second subst line was a little complex, but a whole lot of cleanup can be done with just search and replace and you don't have to use regular expressions- just plain MS word like search and replace lines. -~ Phlox 15:23, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. So it's a bot by another name. OK. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 10:15, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
