Early life and education
As a young man Francis was a miner and seasonal fisherman. He was converted to the Wesleyan Methodist faith when he was 18 and became an active local preacher. He was accepted as a candidate for the ministry in 1835 at the age of about 27 and trained for two years at the Theological Institution, Hoxton.
He was selected to be a missionary to the Aboriginals, the indigenous Australian people, in the Port Phillip District, which is now Victoria, Australia. He arrived in Australia in 1838.
