Franklin Pierce
- Franklin Pierce (November 23, 1804 – October 8, 1869) was an American politician and the fourteenth President of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. He is to date the only president from New Hampshire and was the first president born in the nineteenth century.
Franklin Pierce served as president of the United States from 1853-1857. He was the only president ever elected (to date) from New Hampshire, and the youngest at the time to be elected to the presidency.
His three children all died young, the last, Benjamin Pierce, dying in a train wreck outside Andover, Massachusetts while the president-elect and his family made their way to the inauguration. The loss clouded his presidency.
Pierce's term is seen as a failure by many scholars because of his inability, or unwillingness, to act to prevent the increasingly bitter slavery controversy.
He died 9 October, 1869. (See New York Times Obituary)
