Frederick Campbell, 3rd Earl of Cawdor was born 13 February 1847 in St. Leonard's Hill, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom to John Frederick Vaughan Campbell, 2nd Earl Cawdor (1817-1898) and Sarah Mary Compton-Cavendish (1813-1881) and died 8 February 1911 London, Greater London, England, United Kingdom of a chill. He married Edith Georgiana Turnor (1844-1926) .
The 3rd Earl Cawdor was a multi-faceted man. Educated at Eton and Oxford, he became an MP in 1874 and held numerous other offices over his lifetime, including "Deputy Lieutenant" in three counties, Aide-de-Camp to two monarchs between 1899 and 1911, President of the Royal Agricultural Society in 1901, and First Lord of the Admiralty in 1905. His will reportedly showed £633,328 gross and £52,973 net. See the Dictionary of National Biography.
The earl's father's mother's father's mother was a great-great-great-great-aunt of Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (1926), which makes John and his siblings that monarch's fourth cousins once removed and makes their children her fifth-cousins.
The earl and his daughter-in-law Joan were second cousins, both great-grandchildren of the 2nd Marquess of Bath. Therefore, Joan's children, as well as her husband, were also fifth-cousins to Queen Elizabeth.
