Gabriel born in 1844 in Pucklechurch was the fifth child of Charles Stickler and Eliza Jefferies. He was baptised at the St.Thomas à Becket Church, Pucklecurch on 10 November 1844.

When he was sixteen he worked as a coal miner in Pucklechurch. He married Elizanne Haskins and they had three children. Gabriel and Elizabeth moved to Wick & Abson, Gloucestershire where he continued to work as a coal miner; Elizabeth died in 1884.

Two of their children, Amelia and Robert, immigrated to Canada in 1904 and settled in British Columbia.
