Captain George Frank Rice, U.S.N.(Ret) died peacefully on July 3, 2002 at the age of 93 in Durham, N.C. He is survived by his son, John Russell Rice, John’s wife Celia, 3 grandsons and 3 great grand children. He was born May 22, 1909 in Manchester, N.H. as one of 6 children of John Hiram and Jeanette Cameron Rice. George graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1932, qualified as a Naval Aviator and after 29 years of distinguished service retired from the military in 1961, having achieved the rank of Captain, U.S.N. As a Naval Aviator he fought in World War II in the Pacific where he served as Executive Officer on the carrier “Windham Bay” and flew in the Aleutian Islands out of Kodiak, Alaska. During his Naval career he lived and served variously in Coronado, C.A.; Annapolis, M.D.; Arlington, V.A.; Norfolk, V.A.; Paris, France; Kingsville, T.X.; Anchorage, A.K. and Anacostia, M.D. After retirement from the Navy in 1961, George returned, with his wife Rosa Russell, to Manchester, N.H. where he worked in the family business, Leighton Machine Company. George’s first wife, Rosa, died in 1969. He married again in 1978 to Muriel Schribner Ungar. Muriel died on February 15, 2002, following which George was moved to Durham, N.C. George was loved and respected by his family and will be missed.
