Gradus Hesselink was born on October 18, 1801 in the Netherlands to Teunis Hesselink and Anna Geertruid ter Haar. After his mother died, he went with his father to the Hesselink Farmhouse (Hesselink, Kotten 17) in Kotten, Winterswijk, Netherlands. His father remarried there.

Gradus married first to Geertruij Geijking. He married secondly to Harmina Klomps on December 30, 1838 in the Netherlands. Prior to arrival in the Untied States, Gradus served for 10 years in the Dutch army. Gradus lived at Kotten 1849.

Gradus, Harmina, and their two daughters left the Netherlands. The family left their home on February 2, 1848. They made their way to the port at Rotterdam and took the Elisha Denison to New York. They arrived on October 29, 1849. They made their way to western New York. They settled in Clymer, New York where Gradus purchased ladn and was a farmer. They lived in Clymer for the rest of their lives. Gradus died in Clymer in 1870.
