Haugan (pronounced /ˈhaʊɡən/) is a common Norwegian surname, which is also often used as a farm name. The name Haugan derives the old Norse word haugr which can be translated to mean hill, knoll, or mound. Other derivatives include Hauge, Haugen and Haugland, all of which are also common Norwegian surnames. The Norwegian Land Register Draft of 1950 (in Norwegian: Matrikkelutkastet av 1950) listed over 200 farms within Norway named Haugan.
