  1. Phoebe Isham (1648- )

Notes and references[]

This Captain Isham resided at La Laguna in the Canary Islands, where he became a friend of a Samuel Pepys and thus appears in several entries in Pepys's diaries. He is described therein as "an old and disappointed man who was disappointed of his hopes of preferment at the hands of his kinsman the Earl of Sandwich." He also notes that Captain Isham spent much time in Portugal and Spain in service to the royal families there as a purveyor of wines. When he returned to Barby, Northamponshire, England in his old age, he found that his patrimony was gone. He entered into employment in the chamber of the Queen and accompanied her to Portugal on royal business. It doesn't appear that this Captain Henry Isham was ever in the American Colonies.[1][2]
