Biography

Henry Wheeler de Forest was born 29 October 1855 in New York City, New York, United States to Henry Grant de Forest (1820-1889) and Julia Mary Weeks (1827-1896) and died 28 May 1938 Cold Spring Harbor, Suffolk County, New York, United States of unspecified causes. He married Julia Gilman Noyes (1875-1967) 22 August 1898 .

He was chair of the executive committee of the Southern Pacific Railroad from 1925 to 1928, and chairman of its board of directors from 1929 to 1932.

He assisted E.H. Harriman in the recapitalization of the Wells Fargo Express Company, and was a longtime director of the Equitable Life Assurance Company. With Elihu Root he was the trustee of the majority of the Equitable's capital stock.

He was a graduate of Williston Seminary, Yale (1876), and Columbia University Law School (1878). He was the maternal grandfather of Edie Sedgwick.
