He married Martha Elliott (1776-1824) 7 October 1796 in First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States.
James is mentioned as a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carlisle on May 24, 1798. Listed in the 1798 Tax List for Middleton Township, Cumberland County. James is mentioned in the will of John Thompson in 1812 (as a friend) and also of his father-in-law James Elliott in 1817. In 1815 he is listed as one of the people purchasing something at the estate sale of Jacob Kitch.
