James Keys/Keyes was from what is now Washington County, VA and served, among many campaigns, as First Sergeant at Kings Mountain under Captain David Beattie in William Campbell's command. His application for a pension can be found at http://southerncampaign.org/pen/s15907.pdf. He is descended from Roger Keyes of Augusta/Rockbridge Counties, VA, who is thought to have immigrated from southwestern Scotland, then to Larne, Ireland, and then to Philadelphia in the 1740s.
