James McElroy was born circa 15 April 1850 in County Armagh, Ireland and died 2 January 1918 in Suva, 27 Hawthorne-parade, Haberfield, New South Wales, Australia of carcinoma of stomach. He married Catherine Desmond (1859-1941) 17 July 1877 in Congregational Mance, Olive St, West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.

He arrived in New South Wales in 1856 on the James Fernie from Ireland.

His parents are given as James and Margaret.
