Ancestry and succession
His maternal grandparents were Prince George, Duke of Kent, the fourth son of King George V of the United Kingdom and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, known after her marriage as Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. Princess Marina was the daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Grand Duchess Helen Vladimirovna of Russia (later known as Princess Nicholas of Greece). He has a younger sister, Marina Ogilvy.
Ogilvy does not hold any royal title or perform royal duties. His mother, Princess Alexandra, does however perform royal duties on behalf of The Queen, her first cousin. As an extended member of the British Royal Family, James Ogilvy is invited to major royal occasions such as royal weddings and funerals. He accompanied his widowed mother to the wedding of The Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles in April 2005.
In addition to being in line for the throne, he is in line to the Earldom of Airlie.
He is a godfather of Princess Eugenie of York, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York.
