James Taylor (December 25, 1800 - January 9, 1877) was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, son of Robert Taylor and Betty Hanson who had married at St. Peters, Huddersfield on December 15, 1799.

He first married on September 3, 1825 in Halifax Parish Ruth Priestley (1796-?), daughter of Moses Priestley and Mary Shaw of Greetland, Yorkshire. They were the parents of nine children all born in Halifax Parish:

  • 2. Henry Taylor (1829-1902) married Sarah Ann ______ (b. about 1831). They resided at "Cross Hills", Elland Cum Greetland, Halifax Parish.
  • 3. Benjamin Taylor (1832-) married Jane West (c1835-aft. 1901) in Skircoat Parish, Yorkshire. They resided in Sowerby Bridge, Skircoat Parish, Yorkshire.
  • 5. Moses Priestley Taylor (1837-1837) of Halifax Parish, Yorkshire.
  • 7. Mary Taylor (1842 - bef. 1851) of Halifax Parish, Yorkshire.
