He married Jannetje Hannissen Haverkamp (1795-1854) 10 March 1819 in Nijkerk, Gelderland, Netherlands. Ancestors are from the Netherlands.


Jan had three sisters, Harmijntje Kieft (c1787-1857), Gerritje Stevensen Kieft (c1790-1855) and Trijntje Stevensen Kieft (c1794-1883) and a brother, Breunis Kieft (c1797-1874).
