Johann Leonhard (Leonard) Trump was born on December 28, 1864 in Württemburg, Germany to Johann Georg Trump and Kunigunde Barbara Bach. Leonard was most likely a farmer in his young adulthood.

At the age of 24, he immigrated to the United States with his mother, Barbara, and sisters Helene and Katherina. They made their way to the port at Rotterdam, Netherlands and left for the United States there. The family took the S.S. Rotterdam and arrived on September 5, 1889 at Castle Garden in lower Manhattan.

Leonard married Barbara Phiffer between June 30, 1891 and June 30, 1892. They were married most likely in Chautauqua County, New York. Leonard and Barbara had 6 children. Leonard worked as a farm laborer in Westfield, New York according to the 1910 and 1920 census. In 1904, Leonard was naturalized. In 1920 and 1930, he worked as a farmer in Ripley, New York. Leonard died on January 22, 1939. Leonard and Barbara are buried in Quincy Cemetery in Ripley, Chautauqua County, New York.
