Johanna Magdalena Foppen was born on 18 March 1850 in Maastricht, Limburg. Her parents were Johannes Foppen (1815-1858), a labourer and Johanna Jansen (1818-1867). The third of seven children, Johanna's siblings were Catharina Johanna Maria, Hendrikus Antonius Hermanus, Cornelis Alphonsus, Servaas Jozef, Pieter and Anna. Cornelis and Servaas died in infancy.
Johanna was named after her paternal grandmother, Johanna Magdalena Foppen, known as Naatje Foppen (1792-1864) who lived in Naarden. Her maternal grandparents were Hendrik Jansen (1778-1868), a farmer and Johanna Maria Gisbers (1783-1860), who lived in Nijmegen, Gelderland.
Johannes Foppen died on 20 July 1858 aged 43. At this time Johanna was 8. Her mother remarried on 18 October 1865 to Martinus Verheugt (1822-1896). Johanna's mother died aged 49 on 7 December 1867.
Johanna moved to Amsterdam where she lived with porter Johannes Cornelis Bakker (1851-). They had two children before marrying on 25 November 1885. They didn't have to pay the marriage fees due to insolvency. Johannes and Johanna had four children.
Johanna died in Amsterdam on 20 May 1907 aged 57. Her death was registered the next day by her husband, who died after 1913.
