From grandson Steven James Bookout (1948)
John Henry (Henry to family members) was a Staff Sergeant of Motor Mechanics in the AEF in WWI. He was wounded by a German machine gun and crawled into a shell crater to save himself. He saw a mustard gas cloud come over the rim of the crater and removed a gas mask from a dead German soldier and put in on. The gas burnt him badly over the upper chest cavity area and his arms where his flesh had been exposed from the machine gun fire. He was discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa in 1919. The combination of wounds prevented him from obtaining any other employment but as a small farmer. He received a life-long pension for disability from the government.
