John Horace Smith was born in Baldock, Hertfordshire, England in 1850. His father was John Smith (1820-1898), a gardener, and his mother was Eliza Bray (1821-1874), originally from Buckland. John and his siblings Arthur and Jane grew up in White Horse Street, next door to their paternal grandparents, Thomas, a maltster, and Sarah Smith.
John and Martha Hagger (1845-1929) had two sons, Arthur and Alfred, before marrying on 4 April 1869 in Norton, the bride's hometown. The young family lived for a few years with John's parents, while John worked as a gardener. In about 1877 the family moved to Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, where they first lived on High Street before settling in Church Street.
John worked as a painter and decorator in the 1890's. He died in 1895 in Walton-on-Thames aged 44. His widow Martha died in 1929 aged 83.
