John Richard Bake was born 14 March 1748 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States to Christian Bake (1713-1791) and died October 1838 in Franklin County, Indiana, United States of unspecified causes. He married Eleanor Slacht (?-1835) 15 December 1772 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. Ancestors are from Switzerland.

John Bake served in Captain John Phillip's Company of the third regiment of the New Jersey Militia. He volunteered for service August 20, 1776 and served until Aug 28, 1778. He fought at the Battle of Germantown and crossed the Delaware with George Washington. The census of 1800 found him in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania. The following year he was in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1807 he moved to Butler County, Ohio and in 1838 he moved to Richland Township, Fountain County, Indiana.
