John Single was born 7 December 1791 in England, United Kingdom and died 28 January 1858 at 'Nepean House' in Castlereagh, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Baker (1801-1868) 1 June 1818 at St Matthews in Windsor, New South Wales, Australia.

The 1822 Muster records John Single as having arrived free in the Colony of New South Wales aboard the "Harriett". The "Harriet" arrived in 1817. Also recorded in the 1822 muster was John's wife Sarah, born in the colony, and their 2 children Sarah and John.

According to the Penrith City Council:

He made full use of new scientific methods in agriculture and grazing. He built a school on his property and supported the building of the Castlereagh Anglican Church.
