Joseph Stewart (1750 - 1823) Joseph Stewart and his wife Levinah (Unknown) traveled with four other families from Braddock, PA to Limestone, KY circa 1790. Family tradition says these Stewarts arrived in America circa 1730 and originally settled in Virginia.

I am researching this family and invite any contacts that may link with these Stewarts. I will add additional information as I can.

Allied family names associated with these Stewarts include : Gray, Campbell, West, Grimes, Brookover, Harover, Jacobs, Moore, Rains, McVey and others.

Joseph Stewart resided in Kentucky in the Bourbon/Mason/Bracken counties area for some period of time and then moved across the Ohio River to take land in Brown/Adams counties, Ohio. In November of 1802 he purchased from Nathan Ellis "40 acres more or less on the waters of the Ohio, Northwest Territory". That farm is still in our family and it is located on Route 52 between Aberdeen and Manchester, Ohio.

I am interested in locating the Joseph Stewart family prior to their move to Kentucky in the early 1790s.

I suspect that they may have been located in Morgan Township in Washington County, PA. Morgan Township was separated later from Washington County and became Greene County. This same area of southwestern PA was also considered part of Augusta County Virginia for many years.

Any researchers with access to local documents concerning this area of Pennsylvania may be able to help me. I do have copies of the Tenmile Country, and Pennsylvania tax record archives...but local courthouse records may be required to prove that my Joseph Stewart is the same Joseph Stewart listed in Morgan Township in 1780s.

I also am trying to identify Joseph's father. Likely names for his father are Joseph, James or John. These three male names are repeated in every generation of my Stewarts until the mid 20th century.
