Obituary

MR. JOSEPH VIDLER.

On Wednesday last, New Year's eve, there passed away at his late residence, "Old Place," Jamberoo, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of over 60 years standing, in the person of Joseph Vidler, aged 75 years. Deceased was born in Kent, England, 15th November, 1834, ar- rived in New South Wales with his parents the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Vidler, when only three years of age, who at first settled in Campbelltown district for a little while, thence to Dapto, and thereafter, at Jamberoo, where deceased spent the rest of his life. Deceased followed the dairying industry and was amongst the earliest dis- trict settlers who did pioneering work. On 13th December, 1865, deceased was married in the Union Church, Berry, by the Rev. Robert Wilson, Independent min- ister at Gerringong, to Elizabeth Sarah, daughter of the late Captain and Mrs. George Dawes, of the Hawkesbury district, and spent 48 years of happy married life. Some time ago he retired from dairying active work. For the past nine months he was in failing health, and recently had a stroke of paralysis, from which he never rallied. The funeral took place on Friday, 2nd instant, a short service being first held at deceased's late residence by Rev. W. Wall (Methodist), who also performed the last sad rites at the graveside in the Meth- odist portion of the new cemetery, Jam- beroo. The funeral was largely attended, thus showing the great esteem in which deceased was held. In life he was quiet and unassuming, kind-hearted and true in every degree, and many will remember the hospitality always extended to those he came in contact with, there always being a sense of homeliness and genuine- ness about his manner which one could al- ways appreciate. His life was good and christianlike besides always willing to do what he could to better his fellow man. A widow and the following family survive him, viz: --Mrs Robert McDuff ( Port Mac- quarie), Mrs. Alexander Prior, Mrs. Joseph W. Booth and Mrs. Edward A Booth (Jamberoo); and Messrs George S. Vidler, John J. Vidler, T. H. Edgar Vidler, and Wesley W. Vidler (Jamberoo); one son, James Dixon Vidler, predeceased him. Numerous telegrams, cards and letters of sympathy were received by deceased's widow in her sorrow for the death of her dear one, who was

       Worthy of everlasting love,
     From those he left behind,
A better husband could not be found,
Nor a father so true and kind.
