Kate Mary Joyner was born in Sidcup, Kent in 1862. Her father was James Joyner (1818-1868) and her mother was Mary. Her paternal grandparents were William (1776-1865) and Ann (d.1861) Joyner. Kate had one sister, Mary. James Joyner died aged fifty in 1868 and Kate was subsequently raised by her paternal spinster aunts, Elizabeth and Anne Joyner. Elizabeth was a sub post mistress, and the three women lived at the post office. Anne worked as a seamstress, and took the young Kate under her wing to become a seamstress also. In 1889 Kate married William Joyner Whittle (1849-1935). William worked as a stationer and a draper shopkeeper. He was the son of Thomas Whittle (1803-1887) 'the elder,' an artist and Harriot Joyner (1805-1885). Harriot Joyner was the sister of James Joyner, making Kate and William first cousins.
Kate Mary Whittle passed away in 1935 aged seventy-three. Her husband also died in 1935, aged eighty-six.
