The marriage was performed on a boat in international waters, on Lake Saint Clair, between the USA and Canada, north-east of Detroit, Michigan. . The ceremony was performed by Robert Hughes, the owner and captain of the boat, who was a friend of Luella Rote. A second ceremony was later performed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to include friends who had not been present at the first ceremony.
