Research Notes

There is a birth record for Lydia Fairbank in Sherborn, Massachusetts for 8 March, 1683, for Eleazer and Martha Fairbank.

There is a marriage record for Edward Rice and Lidia Fairbank in Sherborn, Massachusetts on 25 May, 1702.

Edward and Lydia had at least 11 kids - 10 of them were girls - their births can be found in Marlborough vital records. They are listed individually as the children of "Edward Jr. & Lidiah." There doesn't seem to be a listing for Anna anywhere (listed below), so I don't know if she is actually part of this family. This may be Susanna, who is listed in the births for Marlborough as "Susanna, d. Edward Jr.," baptized April 4, 1725.

The following can also be found at WildAgue.com "Edward Rice was born on 29 June 1672 at Marlborough, MA. He was the son of Samuel Rice and Mary Dix . Edward Rice married Lydia Fairbanks , daughter of Eliezer Fairbanks and Martha (?) , on 25 May 1702 at Sherborne, MA. Edward Rice died on 20 July 1741 at Marlborough, MA; (21st per gravestone) aged 68y. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Marlborough, MA. He and Lydia Fairbanks resided at Marlborough, MA. Edward Rice left a will on 1 July 1741, which was proved 5 Dec 1741. The will mentions wife Lydia; son Gideon; daughters Martha Bannister, Lydia Goodenow, Persis Goodenow, Elizabeth How; and grandsons Simeon Heywood (Howard), William Oakes, and Seth Oakes." William and Seth are Tabitha's sons, and I think Simeon was Martha's son.

Lydia outlived her husband by some 14 years; her death is recorded in Marlborough vital records. Her husband Edward is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Marlborough. There is a headstone there with the name of Lydia Rice, but with no dates, so I'm not positive it is her?

Lydia is also mentioned in a book called Genealogy of the Fairbanks Family in America, 1633 - 1897, that can be found online at Google Books. This family history mentioned 10 children - there is no Anna or Savanna.

I believe it likely that the family lost at least 4 of their children to a diphtheria epidemic in 1741. I think she outlived her husband and all but about 3 of her children.

Lydia's will, dated Oct. 26, 1752, proved Dec. 1, 1755, gave to daughters Martha Bannister, Persis Goodnow, and Elizabeth How; as well as grandchildren Lydia Woods; Mary, Zerviah, and Tabitha Goodnow; Ithamar, Levi, and Ebenezer Goodnow; William and Seth Oakes; and Esther Rice.
