Early Life
Mannes Overmars was born in Olst, Overijssel on 16 May 1823. His parents were farmworkers Willem Overmars and Willemina van Putten. His maternal grandparents, Evert and Catharina van Putten, lived nearby and were also farmworkers. Mannes was the eldest of eleven children and, fortunately, ten survived.
First Marriage
On 4 April 1849 in Olst, Mannes married Antje Banté (1825-1865), of the nearby village Wijhe. Antje was the daughter of Willem Bante (1799-1868) and Gerritje Beltman (1800-1846). Both Mannes and Antje were working as daily-hired farmworkers at the time. Together they had six children, four of whom survived.

Second Marriage
Sadly Antje died aged 39 on 15 February 1865. In July of that year Mannes lost his son, Willem as well. On 5 January 1866, less than a year since both the tragedies, Mannes remarried to Derksken Stoelhorst (1826-1904). Two years previously Derksken's husband, Albert Grolleman, had been found dead in a forest. She had also recently lost her daughter, Hanna. Derksken brought two children to the marriage: Manus and Maria. Sadly both died young; Maria shortly after the marriage and Manus in 1889. Mannes and Derksken had two daughters together.

Later Life
Mannes Overmars passed away on 28 October 1902 in Middel Olst, aged 79. Derksken died just over a year later. Mannes was a grandfather to 37, but by the time he died 17 were alive. The youngest died in 1994.
