Marie was the tenth of eleven children of Alexander Thom Cringan (1860-1931) and Lillias Rennie Waugh (1861-1929). As well, she was both the longest-lived and last to die of the 11 children, and so her 20 Cringan nieces and nephews had much longer to get to know her than any of the other aunts.
Marie was born in Toronto in 1901.
