Martha Hagger was christened on 7 December 1845 in Norton, Hertfordshire. Her parents were William Hagger and Sarah Wilsher. William worked as an agricultural labourer until his father died in 1860; he then became the third generation parish clerk of Norton. All of Martha's grandparents lived locally, as did dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Martha married John Horace Smith on 4 April 1869 in Norton. John, a gardener from Baldock, was five years younger than Martha. The couple already had two sons, Arthur and Alfred. The young family lived for a few years with John's parents, John and Eliza. In about 1877 the family moved to Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, where they first lived on High Street before settling in Church Street.
John Smith died in 1895 aged 44, leaving Martha in a very difficult situation. She was 50 years old, a widow with several children including a 5 year old son, with no relatives in the county. She managed to raise the children and all her daughters went into service before marriage.
Martha died in Walton-on-Thames in 1929 aged 83.
