Mary Elmira Brown was born on July 24, 1854 in the Bald Eagle Valley of Centre County, Pennsylvania to Robert Brown and Sarah England. She grew up in Morris Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, where her father was a farmer.
On January 17, 1875, Mary married Thomas A. Buskirk. They lived in the same county, except in Huston Township. By 1900, they were living in the neighboring Elk County, in Jay Township. Thomas worked as a sawyer and a farmer. After Thomas died in 1915, Mary remained in Jay Township with her children. By 1920, she was living with her son Ferdinand, her daughter Gertrude Levendusky, who was married to Paul Levendusky, and her grandson Paul Levendusky, Jr. By 1930, Mary was only living with her son Ferdinand.
In July of 1939, Mary fell at her home and fractured her left hip. She was hospitalized at Elk County General Hospital in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. Mary died from her inhjuries at the hospital on July 19, 1939 at 10:20 a.m at the age of 84, just 5 days before her 85th birthday. Her burial took place the following day, on July 20, 1939 in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Elk County, Pennsylvania.
