Not a lot is known about Mary Evaline Chadwick. At about 16 years old, she married A. J. Frazier and had five children with him (a 6th died before 1900 according to the census of that year). He then supposedly abandoned her and the children between 1897 and 1900. Her children were supposedly orphaned or "placed in an orphanage".
The new discovery of her marriage to Will Vandergriff turns some of our oral tradition on its head. Traditionally, her first husband abandoned her and married a Vandergriff and had 2 children. Now, one of those children is shown to almost certainly be hers with Will Vandergriff. Unfortunately, I cannot find this couple in any census or other record after 1903. I cannot say what befell them, but the family disintegrated before 1910. The family I found in 1920 with 2 children, Albert F. Vandergriff and Blanch Q. Vandergriff, appears to be William Alfred Vandergriff (1861-1933) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Miles Vandergriff (1866-1946). They are buried in the Fairmount Cemetery in Mt. Signal, TN.
